#S-4 - "Blazing Forest Trails" by Charles Simpson and E.R. Jackman - First Edition - Signed by both authors - The Caxton Printers, 1967 - $48.00 Hard-bound in green cloth, stamped in dark green on the front cover and spine. The book measures approx. 6.5" x 9" and has 384 pages on glossy stock. Beautifully written, the book tells of the early days of the United States Forest Service, the men who forged this new entity, and how they guided it through the first half-century of its existence. While it deals mostly with the mountainous West, it will appeal to readers everywhere. It covers such topics as early homesteading, training young foresters, fighting forest fires and their prevention, the struggle to halt blister rust, tales of early day logging practices and the lumberjacks that lived-in and loved the forests, survival in the wilds, the forest as a vital range for ranchers, the development of all-season recreation on the forests and blazing trails, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a chapter titled "Burros, Buckboards, Bed Rolls and Beans", a chapter on Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and finally several chapters outlining the importance of forests to local communities! The condition is NearFine, in a VeryGood+ dustjacket. Scarcely
any sign of handling is evident with respect to the book cover
itself. The jacket has one 1/4" tears at the top of the
spine, and very slight signs of wear at a couple of corner tips.
Otherwise it is completely intact, crisp and looks almost new,
inside its protective mylar jacket cover! Inside the binding
is tight, both front and back hinges are intact. Simpson and
Jackman have signed near the bottom of the front free flyleaf,
in ink. The identical rear flyleaf map is entirely without any
marks. Overall, this book is a joy to behold and one anyone
would be proud to own! |
