#NF-10 - "The First Battle - a Story of the Campaign of 1896" - by William Jennings Bryan - First Edition, first printing - W.B. Conkey Co., Chicago, 1896 - $39.00

Hardbound, Half maroon calf leather lettered in gilt on the spine, and maroon pebbled cloth stamped in silver with a likeness of Bryan and his facsimile signature. The book measures approx. 7" x 9.25" and has 629 pages. It tells of what is described in the Preface as being the most critical campaign in American history! He includes the text of his most important speeches along with other addresses and documents that he felt were significant in that campaign. Finally, there is a biographical sketch of the author written by his wife. The book is illustrated with 49 photographs and 4 maps of campaign trips taken by Bryant.

The condition is Fair... but fully intact... with faults that detract visually, but take nothing away from this being an excellent reading copy. There is bumping and rubbing at the corners and edges, with the underlying boards showing at the tips and top of the spine, the top 1/4" of which is chipped. There is a 2" split down the right-hand edge of the spine from the top. The front hinge is cracked but still intact; back hinge is just starting at the top. Pages are toned, and bound-in photographs (on glossy stock) lightly mottled. I saw a half-dozen pages with tape repairs to closed tears, most of which appeared to be about 1/2". There are also 3-4 newspaper articles laid-in, loose, at intervals inside the text block.
