#NS-9 - “Alexander Wilson - Naturalist and Pioneer” by Robert Cantwell - Lippincott - First Edition - $80.00

The biography of the first person to study the birds of America in their native forests. His work “American Ornithology” remains unrivaled for the accuracy of the paintings, and the accuracy and humor of his writing. The original 9 volumes appeared between 1808 and 1814, and are considered to be one of the finest works of art produced in the United States! They were the first classic of color printing, depicting hundreds of paintings in an explosion of radiant color. And yet, the man remains virtually unknown except in certain small circles.

Hardbound in brown cloth, decorated and lettered in black on the front cover and spine, the book measures approx. 9.5” x 12” and has 319 pages. There are 8 color plates, and an additional 16 of his original engravings in b&w.

The condition is VeryGood+, with light bumping and rubbing at the corners and edges. The binding is tight, hinges are unbroken, and the text block is crisp and tight. The dustjacket is in VeryGood condition, with very light rubbing at the corner tips and edges of the spine. There is a 1/4” closed tear at the bottom of the spine of the dustjacket, which is protected in a mylar dustjacket cover. Overall, one could not ask for a used book in nicer condition!
