#A-3 - Old Farm Fairies - A Summer Campaign Against King Cobweaver's Pixies - by Henry Christopher McCook, with 150 illustrations. - $95.00 Published in Philadelphia by George W. Jacobs & Co., in 1895, this is a First Edition. Hardbound in pictorial tan cloth illustrated in silver, orange and russet. It measures 5.25" x 7.5" and has 392 + xxxviii pages. H.C. McCook is also the author of "American Spiders and Their Spinning-work" and other scholarly works dealing with arachnids. This, however, is a charming children's story of how a band of brownies engages in a campaign to rid their territory of the web-weaving "pixies" which include all manner of accurately described spiders. The entertaining and fanciful story is interwoven with the accurate natural history of the spiders, which are even identified by their genus-names! The artist's illustrations are equally accurate when it comes to the different arachnids and their structures, and all are set in appropriate natural backdrops. I can imagine the continued, fanciful play-making a child would enjoy outdoors having read this story and then coming across various different styles of webs. The book is in NearFine condition, with slight bumping of the corners and edges of the spine as the only external faults. It is protected by a mylar book cover. The interior of the book is clean, tight, bright and complete. A 5/8"-diameter bookseller's sticker is unobtrusively placed at the LL of the inside back cover. NO other marks or faults! |
