#RH-16 - "Cattle Country of Peter French" by
Giles French - Published by Binfords & Mort - Portland, Oregon,
1972 - Dustjacket - $25.00
The fascinating story of a physically small man who founded
and wisely ran the largest cattle empire in Oregon history in
the Blitzen Valley of Harney County! The tale of Peter French's
unlikely rise to such prominence and untimely and violent end
are the stuff of legends... of which his is one of the biggest!
Hard-driving and ambitious, French, in just a few years, gained
control of 200,000 acres of range land and had herds numbering
thousands of head of cattle. The book is as honest a portrayal
of the various people and events involved as has ever been compiled!
The front and back endpapers consist of an impressively detailed
map of the route French took bringing cattle from California
to Oregon, and the SE portion of Oregon where he settled. Pinpointed
on the map are the ranches of the other principal characters,
plus other important locations and physical features in this
real-life drama!
The condition is NearFine in VeryGood dustjacket. The green
cloth binding, lettered in brown on the front and spine, has
only the faintest of bumps and rubs at the bottom of the spine.
The dustjacket is price-clipped but has a small price sticker
at the bottom of the front flap ($6.50)! It comes in a Brodart
protective dust-jacket cover. Inside there is a gift inscription
near the top of the front, free endpaper, and another at the
top of the half-title page. Otherwise this book and its jacket
are crisp, clean, tight, bright and complete... a truly important
regional history in beautiful condition!
