#LE-1 - “How to Identify Prints” by Bamber Gascoigne - Thames and Hudson, 1995 - $65.00

A comprehensive and indispensable reference work for print and fine illustrated book collectors, dealers in prints and illustrated books, and indeed anyone interested in graphic art. Arranged in self-contained sections that can be consulted individually or as part of a larger detective operation, this guide helps one to accurately identify any printed image. A special section entitled “The Sherlock Holmes Approach” leads the reader with no previous knowledge towards the correct answer, while cross-referencing between sections provides a sequence of clues on some unusual kinds of prints with which even the expert may well be unfamiliar. A key element of the book is the many illustrations of enlarged details showing the different appearance of various techniques under strong magnification, specially photographed by the author to reveal diagnostic features. In all some 90 different techniques are described, both monochrome and color, and including all the manual methods of printmaking as well as the mechanical processes which constitute the majority of printed images. Hardbound in tan cloth stamped in gold on the front cover and spine, the book measures approx. 9” x 10.25”, and has 208 pages. It is printed on high-quality, glossy stock for the maximum benefit in presenting the detailed illustrations.

The condition is FINE, in a FINE dustjacket, the latter of which is enclosed in our mylar dustjacket protector.
