#F-3 - The Best of Fritz Leiber - by Fritz Leiber - 1974 - Hardbound in an un-clipped dustjacket - $20.00

This book was published by Nelson Doubleday, Inc. in 1974, and is the BOMC and First Hardcover Edition. Hardbound in yellow cloth, it measures 5.75" x 8.25" and has 301 pages. This is a collection of 22 stories by the recognized master of the darker side of the fantasy genre There is an introduction by Poul Anderson, one who knew Fritz personally, as did I, but only briefly. Fritz's father, Fritz Leiber Sr., and mother, Virginia Bronson Leiber or "Brownie" to her friends, were across the street neighbors in Huntington Palisades, an early subdivision of Pacific Palisades, California when I was growing up. The Sr. Leibers were retired Shakesperian and film actors (though he still did occasional bit-parts in the movies), and some of Jr.'s sense of drama and fantasy had to come from that classical quarter. There was a brief period in the 1940's when Fritz, Jr., his wife, Jonquil, and son Justin (also an author), lived with his parents before moving back east. He was a giant of a man at well-over 6-feet, with an unruly mop of nearly black, hair that often stood-out like it was full of static electricity... or perhaps had experienced a too-close encounter with one of his own creations! But I digress.

The book is in VeryGood+ condition, with bumped corners and extremities, but little else to show it has been handled. The dustjacket is also VeryGood+, with slight rubbing at the corner tips and a couple of creases at the top and bottom of the spine. Otherwise all is crisp, clean, tight, bright and complete, inside and out. The jacket painting by Larry Kresek is clean and bright with NO faults. About as nice a copy as one could hope to find!
