#RH-18 - “The Memoirs of Chief Red Fox ” - $10.00

Autobiography of RED FOX, a Sioux and nephew of Crazy Horse, who was born in 1870 in the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains, and who lived more than a century to see this book published in 1971. He died in 1976.

Hardbound in black cloth stamped in gold, this book also comes in the original, un-price-clipped dust jacket. It measures 5.75” x 8.5” and has 208 pages. The text is illustrated with 16 pages of photographs. This is a stated second printing of the First Edition.

Though he later left the reservation to travel around the world with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, it was only after hearing that Crazy Horse had been killed by U.S. Army soldiers, and after listening to firsthand reports of the Wounded Knee Massacre. From that time on the struggle of the Indian never left him and in his own words: “Mentally and physically I have found enjoyment, but spiritually I have been a mourner at the bedside of a dying race. I have achieved peace by accepting the inevitable destiny for the people whose blood runs through my veins and whose sublime love of nature has always been on my mind.” From over 75 years of notes, Chief Red Fox, with the help of Cash Asher, journalist and former Executive Director of the American Indian Defense Association, has given us a remarkable record of the Red man’s fight for survival, the loss of his rights and his identity. Excerpts from those notes are found in the last 16 pages of the book.

The condition is NearFine, in a VeryGood dust jacket. The book itself has a bit of sun-fading at the top edge of the cover. Otherwise the book is fresh, crisp, clean, tight, bright and complete... in short, but for that one fault, it is like the day it came off the press. The dust jacket is lightly faded at the top and bottom of the spine, the top of the back panel and top and right edges of the front panel. I see about a half-dozen small chips at the corners and edges of the spine. Otherwise, the jacket is complete and nice appearing.
