#M-7 “Southwestern Indian Tribes” by Tom Bahti - $18.00 This book is soft bound, and measures 9” x 12”. Within its 72 pages plus the covers, Mr. Bahti explores the early history of Native Americans and their early contacts with Europeans. It then goes on to compare and contrast 38 distinct tribes living in the Southwest. These are the Acoma, the Jicarilla, Mescalero, San Carlos and White Mountain Apache, Chemehuevi, Cochiti, the Colorado tribes of Cocopa, Mohave, Maricopa, and Yuma, Havasupai, Hopi, Hualapai, Isleta, Jemez, Laguna, Nambe, Navajo Paiute, Picuris, Pima, Pojoaque, San Felipe, San Ildefonso, San Juan, Sandia, Santa Ana, Santa Clara, Santo Domingo, Taos, Tesuque, Tohono O’otam, Ute, Yavapai, Yaqui, Zia and Zuni. With nearly 8 dozen photographs, maps, drawings and paintings, 48 of these are in full color. Mr. Bahti’s easy to understand descriptions of each of these tribes, their ways of life, clothing, art, crafts, tools, weapons, etc., are succinct but cover these areas of interest in a most satisfying way. One comes away from this reading with a new understanding of the complexities of their cultures, which largely embraced the goals of reverence, respect and peaceful coexistence. I for one also came away with a desire to know more about them via travel through this often sere, but almost always beautiful region of the country. The condition is NearFine, with only the barest hint of bumping at the corners. The interior of the book is fresh, crisp, clean, tight, bright and complete... almost like new!
