#FE-9 - Elisha Kent Kane and the Seafaring Frontier - by Jeanette Mirsky - First Edition - $45.00 Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1954. First edition. Hardbound in blue cloth, with VG dustjacket. Hardbound in blue cloth, measuring 5.75" x 8.25", with 201 pages, plus notes and index. A naval surgeon and naturalist, Kane (1820-1857) was the first American to extensively explore the Arctic region as a member of both the First and Second Grinnell Expeditions, commanding the latter, in unsuccessful attempts to locate the lost English explorer Sir John Franklin and his crew. His published accounts of those voyages (1853, 1856) helped to humanize the struggles of arctic exploration and propelled their author to the status of a national hero. The book is in NearFine condition, with only the barest hint of bumping. The jacket is in VeryGood+ condition, is NOT price-clipped, very lightly worn at the corners, with a couple of tiny chips at the top of the spine. |
