Hardbound in black cloth with decorated paper paste-ons front and back, this book measures approx. 5.75” x 8.25” and has 207 pages. Published by Harper & Brothers, this is a stated First Edition The book is a biography of King Henry Christophe of Haiti. Of additional interest are six full-page, 2-color woodcuts, by Mahon Blaine, illustrating the text. The endpapers have another 2-color illustration by him, and several smaller b&w illustrations appear as chapter headings and elsewhere. Also, there is a 4-page reference bibliography at the end. One of he last two pages gives a brief bio of the author, both a writer and anthropologist, atypically concerned about the situation of the negro throughout the world at a time when that was not the norm for caucasians. The other is an excerpt from his first book, “Tom-Tom”... about the natives of Suriname (sic) in South America, among whom he lived for a time.

The condition is VeryGood, with bumping and rubbing at the corners and edges. A former owner’s bookplate is nearly affixed in the UL corner of the inside front cover Otherwise the book is fresh, crisp, clean, tight, bright and complete, with unbroken hinges!
