#C-31 - "The Feast of the Lamps" by Charlet Root - Illustrated by Roger Duvoisin - First Edition - Published by Albert Whitman, 1938 - $15.00 Hardcover, in maroon cloth, with a full-size paper paste-on on the front cover. This is a Junior Press Book, measuring 7.5" x 9 1/4" tall, and is a First Edition (1938 on both the title page and verso). Quite a wonderful story of a six-year-old girl of India, Meenakshi, who was born on the day of the Feast of Lamps. Her family decided to make the day's journey to Madura, a city where the Feast would be celebrated in a grand way, resulting in many strange sights and adventures for the little girl. A delightful glimpse into the culture of a land which still seems mysterious and enchanting to most people of the Western world. There are 75 pages, and 27 illustrations by award-winning illustrator, Roger Duvoisin, who two years later wrote and illustrated "Donkey Donkey", for which he is much better known. 19 of the illustrations in this book are in full color and half of those are double-page in size! The end papers are also fully illustrated in color!! The book is in Good+ condition, with bumping and rubbing at
the corners and edges, with the underlying boards just peeking
at 3 of the corners. As an indication of the otherwise light
wear this book has had, the full-front, paper paste-on illustration
is complete and undamaged! Inside the hinges are intact, and
the interior pages crisp, clean, tight, bright and complete with
only three very faint smudges noted at the bottom of the respective
pages. A book any child would be pleased and proud to own. |
