A Nayar Servant at Palace Travancore  -  This little lady, although she sweeps, is of the noble Nayar caste, because only Nayars are permitted to clean the rooms of the Maharajah.  The Nayar women have more freedom than any women of any land.  (This is excerpted from the artist's text to accompany color plates from the "Vanishing India" exhibition, as written in "The Heritage of India" by H.J. Stowitts, an original book manuscript dated August 5, 1938.)  Complete provenance and Museum Exhibition History will accompany the sale of this painting!  If you would like to know more about the artist, his life, this series of 150 paintings, and other works and exhibitions of his, please visit the Stowitts Museum in Pacific Grove, CA or check them out at http://www.stowitts.org/ .
