A Nayar Servant at Palace Travancore - This little
lady, although she sweeps, is of the noble Nayar caste, because
only Nayars are permitted to clean the rooms of the Maharajah. The
Nayar women have more freedom than any women of any land. (This
is excerpted from the artist's text to accompany color plates
from the "Vanishing India" exhibition, as written in
"The Heritage of India" by H.J. Stowitts, an original
