#FA-13 - Untitled Original Pencil and Watercolor sketch - Approx. 12" x 20" - Unsigned - $175.00

This unusual work of art depicts a very atypical mother and child. We purchased it in the mid-1990's from the estate of Stuart Iverson, former artistic director of the California Museum of Science and Industry. It is one of many pieces we obtained from that estate and which can be found on this website. The woman is rendered with a very masculine upper torso and arms. Behind her is a serpent with a death's head, leering over her shoulder. The serpent is coiled around what could be the "Tree of Life", which has stylized flowers, which contain vignettes of women in poses of exultation or despair. Though the style is very suggestive of that used in Post Office Murals done by WPA artists in the 1930's, we believe this was probably rendered sometime in the 1960's or 1970's. The artist is unknown. The mat opening measures approx. 11.5" x 19.5", with an overall matted size of 17" x 25". It has been shrink-wrapped on a foam-core backing for protection. The label in the UR corner is on the outside of the shrink-wrap film.

The condition is VeryGood+, with a small scuff between her feet, a tiny pinhole above her head, and a small blemish near her left armpit... all of which are easily repairable. Otherwise you'll find this piece to be crisp, clean, bright and without ANY other faults whatever. Unless the purchaser insists on an alternative shipping method and assumes all responsibility for any damage, we will ship this item unmounted, loosely rolled, protectively wrapped and shipped in a mailing tube via Priority Mail, because of the greater handling care that rate generally receives.
