#AP-30 - Semi-Risque Wood Engraving - Front cover, "Every Saturday" Journal of Choice Reading - Saturday January 22, 1870 - $35.00

This interesting engraving is typical of the technique used for most periodical and book illustrations in the 19th century and before. Bass wood was the most commonly used, because it had a fine grain, and was both soft enough to take the engraver's burin well, but still hard enough to withstand the printing process. This piece is somewhat unusual for a literary journal intended as family fare, in that the young maiden is shown partially exposed and in some distress. One can only wonder if the image is tied-into some story inside the paper!

The image area is approx. 8.75" x 10", not counting the printed header, and it has then been matted and backed using archival-grade materials, to an overall 14" x 18". This is a common size, and might be easily and inexpensively framed the print using off-the-shelf frames made for that size, and possibly available at Wal-Mart, Target, or stationery and art supply stores. The print has been shrink-wrapped for protection. The large label in the UR corner is on the outside of the shrink-wrap which, of course, would be removed prior to inserting in a frame.

The condition is NearFine, with a bumped UL corner of the mat (which should be completely covered by the normal set-back on any frame). NO other faults!
