#CP-16 - 1906 illustration "The Spruce Tree" by Jessie Willcox Smith - Matted and backed... ready to frame - $15.00

This print is a photogravure, a technique developed at the end of the 19th century, and still used today. It is from an article titled "The Child in a Garden", and appeared in Century Magazine. This print was found in the stock of a San Francisco area print merchant, and we were informed that it had been salvaged from a "broken" book that was no longer in collectible condition.  A delightful way to decorate your childs room and offer him or her many hours of inspirational and imaginative thought.

Jessie Willcox Smith was one of the top commercial artists of the early 20th century. She was a contemporary of Elizabeth Shippen Green, whose artistic style she mirrors. This in not surprising, since both of them were students of renowned master illustrator, Howard Pyle, along with N.C. Wyeth, Dean Cornwell, Frank E. Schoonover, and many other developing illustrators of that time.

The image area is approx. 5" x 7.5", and the print has then been matted and backed, using acid-free materials, to an overall size of 11" x 14", a standard size. This means that one could easily and inexpensively frame the print using any of the off-the-shelf frames made for that size, available at Wal-Mart, Target, or other big-box stores. The print has also been shrink-wrapped for protection. The large label in the UR corner is on the outside of the shrink-wrap which, of course, would be removed prior to inserting in a frame.

The condition of both mat and print is FINE, with NO faults whatever! The somewhat bleached-out look in the enlargement is due to some glare reflected from the shrink-wrap. The actual color is as shown in the other example above.
