#RP-3 - "The Venetian Lamplighter" by Maxfield Parrish - Original 1924 Edison Mazda Calendar Print - $550.00 This print image measures approx. 6.35" x 10.5" (not counting the borders), and according to the description in the "Maxfield Parrish Identification and Price Guide", 3rd Edition, by Erwin Flack, this is a 'small-cropped print'. The image exactly matches that shown in that reference. The overall size of this piece, including the borders and part of a hardware store's imprint at the bottom, is 8.4" x 12.75". The words "©1923 Edison Lamp Works of General Electric Co." are in seen in black at the left-bottom of the print, and "M.P" is seen at the LR. The back of the piece is printed with facsimiles of the first 4 Edison Mazda Calendar prints, along with "The Venetian Lamplighter - The Fifth of a Series of Paintings Portraying the Development of Light - Painted by Maxfield Parrish for The Edison Mazda Lamp Works of The General Electric Co.". There is further text which traces the development of light from Prometheus's theft of fire from the sun and gave it to man... to be used in oil-filled clay lamps. The balance of that story is lost with the cropping-away of the calendar portion of the print. The print is lightly held on a backing board, using archival-grade, non-staining tape (at the top margin only), and is matted using acid-free materials. The condition is VeryGood+, with a faint 3/8" bend extending to the left of the left-hand scroll. A very small, very faint scuff is in the extreme UR corner of the olive green area at the bottom where the hardware imprint resides. There are 2 light bends in the buff-colored right-hand margin near the middle and at the bottom. The upper of these extends a short ways into the brown border. A third, which is an actual crease shows in the UR corner. There are also a couple of very light smudges in the left and right margins. That said, none of these minor faults are readily visible until a close inspection is made. In every other way, this print is crisp and clean, with fresh, unfaded color! As with all of our merchandise, we unconditionally guarantee its authenticity. |
