#RP-14 - 7 Prints by N.C. Wyeth - From the book "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson - Scribner's, 1911 - $20.00 each All 7 prints are from a 1911 edition of this classic tale by one of the great authors of adventure fiction at the turn of the 20th century. Wyeth though a great deal of Stevenson, and illustrated 4 of his books for Scribner's over the years. One reference I have shows him illustrating 58 books over his career, not to mention all the other commercial successes he had from magazine illustration to advertising art and more, plus being much in demand for commissioned original works for notables throughout the early 20th century! Wyeth was a student of Howard Pyle, possibly the greatest success in the above fields and teacher of commercial artists in the early years of the 20th century. He and fellow students of Pyle's went on to shape commercial illustration for the entire first half of the century. It was only after the end of WWII than a whole new generation of artists changed that "look". The image areas are approx. 5.25" x 6.5", and have been matted and backed using archival-grade materials, to an overall 11" x 14", a standard size. This means that one could easily and inexpensively frame them using any of the off-the-shelf frames made for that size, and available at Wal-Mart, Target, or other big-box stores. The prints have also been shrink-wrapped for protection. The large label in the UR corner is on the outside of the shrink-wrap which, of course, would be removed prior to inserting in a frame. The condition of 6 of the prints and mats is FINE, with NO
faults whatever. The print of the man running away from his
assailant (both with sabers in their hands), has a few pencil
tracings outlining the men. These don't show up unless viewed
carefully under strong, oblique light, but we try to describe
any and all faults carefully. |
