#OM-11 - "SOUTHWESTERN INDIAN ARTS & CRAFTS" by Tom Bahti - 1966 - $19.95 Looking for a great overview of the arts and crafts of the Southwestern Native American tribes? Then you'll like this book. The author, a nationally recognized authority on the arts and crafts of the Southwestern indian, was also a respected Tucson, AZ dealer in this field. The front cover features a silver sand-casting belt buckle photographed against a Navajo weaving! Measuring 9" x 12" it has 32 pages plus the covers. The contents include "Silverwork" - with many examples of Navajo, Zuni and Hopi creations; and "Notes & Comments", which looks at such subjects as Symbolism, Value of Native crafts, Commercialism, Coral, Black Pottery, Naja, Sandcasting, Inlay, and Overlay. Other chapters are "Pawn"; "Zuni Fetishes"; "Painting"; "Navajo Weaving" (with examples of the various regional patterns, and a map pinpointing the location they come from... not to mention photos of women spinning and weaving in the traditional manner); "How to Buy and Care For Indian Crafts"; a large centerfold map of AZ & NM, showing the reservation areas, and designs peculiar to each of the dozens of tribes that inhabit the region; "Hopi Kachina Dolls", "Turquoise" (with a map showing the major types found in the SW); "Baskets" and "Pottery".
