#SM-4 - 1939 Map of Alaska - 32” x 46” - $50.00 This map was published by the Kroll Map Company of Seattle, Washington. Printed in black on white, with blue for oceans and major watercourses, and red used to outline the 4 judicial districts, and also to denote landing fields. This is a most unusual and extremely detailed map, in that it not only shows major rivers and creeks, but detailed divisions of these so one can clearly see the extent of watersheds. Mountain ranges, specific mountains, mountain passes and peaks and their elevations are there, as are roads... differentiating between automobile roads and highways, sled roads (horse teams or tractor), trails (packhorse or dog sled), tramways, railroads, portage trails, shelter cabins, dredges, glaciers, swamps and many other features not typical of most maps! There are also maps of Juneau, Seward, Fairbanks and Anchorage, showing the extent of the developed areas at that time! All of the ALCAN highway within Alaska is shown, plus most of its extent within the Yukon Territory. Reference is made on the back cover of a more extensive map, published by the company, which showed the full length of the ALCAN Hwy., all the way from the U.S. border. It is easy to see that one could search through dozens of maps and other references and not find all that has been thoughtfully and concisely included on this one document!!! Measuring approx. 32” x 46”, the map is contained within soft covers. The covers are a medium-weight soft, orange card stock, printed in black. The bound size is approx. 4.5” x 8.5”. The condition of the map is NearFine, with a ” tear (along the file-fold nearest to where the folded map is attached to the cover) that has been repaired on the back (un-printed) side, using Filmoplast-P, a nearly invisible, non-staining tape used by conservators and libraries to repair and stabilize important documents and books. Otherwise you’ll find the map to be crisp, clean, tight, bright and complete... without any other faults! The cover is in VeryGood+ condition, with light bumping and rubbing at the corners and edges, and a couple of very small creases at a corner and along an edge... both of these being on the back cover. There is just the slightest hint of soil at the edges.
