#SM-10 - ca. 1930 Map of Oklahoma - 17” x 22” - $25.00

This map was published by Mid-West Map Company of Aurora, Missouri, and is titled “Highways and Map Guide of Oklahoma”. Printed in blue on white, it is a typical road map in the sense that it shows the typical numbered federal and state highways, cities and towns, mountains and rivers, etc. However, there is also an “Authorized Guide and Map Stations of Oklahoma” found on the reverse side These would include hotels, car camps, restaurants, gas stations, repair shops and automobile agencies, plus a few other miscellaneous businesses, all of which purported to offer goods or services of interest to motorists. Also on the reverse side from the map, is a listing of cities and towns, with their coordinate positions on the map, along with their populations at the time of publication. The date of publication is not given, but the Index to Cities and Towns uses figures from “1930 Census”. You will also find it interesting to note the predominance of gravel highways in the state, with almost all of the local connecting roads being shown as gravel or dirt!

The map measures approx. 17” x 22”. Its size, folded is approx. 5.5” x 8.5”. You will find the reading of the advertising comments appended to each business listing to be quaint and in many instances humorous, in addition to being quite educational as to what the writers thought would be of interest to the needy motorist of that period in history!

The condition of the map is VeryGood+, with bumping and rubbing at the corners and edges, a notation in blue ink at the bottom of the front cover which reads: “1930 Census of Cities”, and a Council Bluffs, Iowa oil company’s hand stamp at the top of the front cover. A bit of light handling soil along exposed fold lines and two 1/4” edge tears are the only other faults. Otherwise you’ll find it to be crisp, clean, tight, bright and complete.
