#SM-11 - 1930 Map of Texas - 17” x 22” - $25.00 This map was published by Mid-West Map Company of Aurora, Missouri, and is titled “Highway Map and Guide of Texas”. Printed in blue on white, it is a typical road map in the sense that it shows the typical numbered federal and state highways, cities and towns, mountains and rivers, etc. However there is also an “Authorized Guide and Map Stations of Texas” found on the reverse side. These would include hotels, car camps, restaurants, gas stations, repair shops and automobile agencies, plus a few other miscellaneous businesses, all of which purported to offer goods or services of interest to motorists. Also on the reverse side from the map, is a listing of cities and towns, with their coordinate positions on the map, along with their populations at the time of publication. The date of publication is not given, but an online search has indicated that Ross S. Sterling was the Commissioner of Highways in the year 1930. His name is given in that capacity (no date) at the LL corner of the map. One will certainly find this map fascinating, for all the unpaved roads (gravel and dirt) which totally predominate in the state!. The map measures approx. 17” x 22”. Its size, folded is approx. 5.5” x 8.75”. You will find the reading of the advertising comments appended to each business listing to be quaint and in many instances humorous, in addition to being quite educational as to what the writers thought would be of interest to the needy motorist of that period in history! The condition of the map is VeryGood+, with light bumping and rubbing at the corners and edges. Some light soil along fold lines and exposed edges. Otherwise you’ll find it to be crisp, clean, tight, bright and complete!
