#NP-11 - Black Collectible: Mechanical, Tin-Litho, Pinback, Toy Head - ca. 1915 Germany - $295.00 This remarkable piece measures approx. 2.5" x 2.75" and is in perfect working order. It depicts the face of a Black person with exaggerated lips, bugged eyes and large yellow earrings. A string is attached to a small loop below his chin, and when this is pulled, the eyes roll counter-directionally from each other so as to make them roll from cross-eyed to sideways to upwards. A hidden spring makes them return to more-or less normal when the string is released. On the back are two vertical pins for attaching this to a shirt or jacket. Also, the work "GERMANY" is stamped on the plate covering the mechanism. Aside from a few light scratches, it's in VeryGood condition! A description of this toy can be found in the 1993 edition of "Black Collectibles Sold In America" on pp. 289. Our price is nearly half the price quoted by that reference book. |
