#AP-21 - Autographed photos of Mariachi Los Camperos - 8.5” x 9” - $25.00

Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano was formed 41 years ago. Its director, Natividad Cano, came to Los Angeles in 1957. For four years he worked as a musician, later becoming the musical arranger for Mariachi Chapala. In 1961, Cano became the musical director of Mariachi Chapala and changed their name to Mariachi Los Camperos. The ensemble has since grown in prominence and gained international recognition.

His longtime association with Linda Ronstadt, backing her up in live performances and on her milestone “Canciones de Mi Padre” album, helped catapult mariachi music to unprecedented national prominence. In 1988-89, the group worked on the promotion of that album, which included national television appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and the Grammy Awards Show. They also appear on Linda Ronstadt's “Mas Canciones” album (1991).

The highly respected Natividad "Nati" Cano is a pioneer and leader of the Mariachi Renaissance in the United States and Mexico. He is credited for taking the mariachi form from the streets to prestigious concert halls throughout the United States. From the White House where he performed before President and Mrs. Clinton, to Guadalajara's Teatro de Degollado where they performed before President and Mrs. Zedillo, to Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall. From Oslo, Norway to San Francisco's Orpheum Theater, Nati Cano's dream of taking this musical folk tradition to the mainstream has certainly been realized.

This group of photos was published in the local newspaper at Avalon, Santa Catalina Island, California. I personally collected these autographs the summer of 1964. At the time I was a graduate student at USC, and spent the greater part of my summer vacation in Avalon... from 1962-1965. I was a self-taught guitarist, doing gigs at the Hurricane Cove, a local dive, in the evening, and entertaining young ladies, and anyone else who wanted to listen, on the beaches and streets during the daytime. June to September, Los Camperos, having been hired by the city of Avalon and the steamer company, would play on the steamer which brought tourists to Catalina from San Pedro each day. They would then do 3 more performances along Avalon’s strand until 3:00 when the steamer returned to San Pedro. It was during their breaks that I got to know them... a friendship that continued through all 4 years I summered there.

Nati Cano, the leader is in the center (one of two members from whom I didn’t get autographs), Clemente Delgadillo (who played the guitarron) is at the lower left, and was a particular friend of mine. Ricardo Gonzales... at the middle right... had a beautiful voice that could carry more than a block! To hear his solos on ‘Guadalajara’, ‘La Paloma’ and ‘Malagueña Salerosa’ was to be thrilled every time! Other members who autographed this were David Coronado, Pablo Lopez, Pedro Hernandez, Febronio (sp?) Coronado, and finally ??..ore Ordaz-D., whose first name I can’t decipher.

The condition is VeryGood, with a bit of light soil at the right and two corner creases. Note that this piece was cut out of the local paper, and therefore there is printing on the back side. Because I collected these autographs myself, I warrant each of these signatures to be authentic... backed by my money-back guarantee.
