#CC-8 - Memorial Photo of Headstone for a young Woodman of the World - 1902 - $20.00 Measuring approx. 4.25” x 6”, the photo is mounted on a 6.5” x 8.5” cabinet-type backing card. The headstone is bordered by a garland of berry vines. The entire monument has been cast to look like a tree stump, flanked on the right with berry vines and with fern fronds at the bottom. The very top has the insignia for the “Woodmen of the World” (see info about them further on). Below that is a scroll which reads “Here rests a Woodman of the World - James Earley Faulkner - Born Aug. 17, 1878 - Died Mar. 20, 1902 - a devoted Christian - Gone but not forgotten”. Mr. Joseph Root founded Woodmen of the World in Omaha , Nebraska , which is still one of their main offices. The financial statement as of Dec 31, 1891 listed Membership at 5,461. The first certificate of membership was issued to Wm. A. McCully , Camp #1, Independence , Kansas , on Dec 29, 1890. The first Camp charter was issued to Alpha Camp #1, Omaha , Nebraska , Jan 10 1891. This lodge is still in existence. When he founded Woodmen , Root envisioned an organization dedicated to helping its fellow man. Its purpose was "to minister to the afflicted to relieve distress; to cast a sheltering arm about the defenseless living;... to encourage broad charitable views..." The objects of Woodcraft have always exemplified love, honor and remembrance. Fraternalists are concerned with helping others, promoting patriotism, civic responsibility , and providing financial protection for their families. The first death claim paid was that of Willie O. Warner , who drowned
June 14, 1891, in Niles , Michigan. From 1909- 1947, 12,000 members with
tuberculosis received free care at the Modern Woodmen Sanatorium in Woodmen,
Colorado. CONDITION: of the photo is NearFine, sepia-toned, but without any other faults. The backing card has some handling soil and light bumping at the corners. Otherwise the entire piece is without creases or tears, and the photo is well focused!
