#AP-25 - Vice-President Richard Nixon Autographed Photo - 8” x 10” - $245.00

This autographed photo has two signatures. That of Vice-President Richard Nixon, and Oregon Governor Paul L. Patterson. The time was sometime during Patterson’s term of office, which was 1952-1956. Location unknown. The following 2 paragraphs present information found on a Google search.

“The site was Bolton Landing at Lake George, New York. The event was the meeting of the Governors' Conference, which opened the same day, July 12, 1954. The announcement was about President Eisenhower’s proposals for financing the proposed interstate highway system, and was presented by Vice-President Richard Nixon, and it quite stunned the Governors. Though there were detractors, any initial opposition to the President’s proposal was largely eliminated before the Governor’s Conference ended. Paul Patterson was present at that conference.”

“The President did not want to lose the momentum that had been established, so on August 10, he met at the White House with a committee of the Governors' Conference to discuss his proposal. The committee, which was headed by Governor Walter J. Kohler, Jr. of Wisconsin, included Governors Robert Kennon of Louisiana, Frank J. Lausche of Ohio, and J. Howard Pyle of Arizona as well as Democratic Governor Lawrence W. Wetherby of Kentucky and Republican Governor Paul L. Patterson of Oregon. Commerce Secretary Sinclair Weeks and Secretary of the Treasury George Humphrey were among the aides who joined the President and Governors for the discussions.”

Though we do not have any specific knowledge concerning the when and where of this photograph, the above public record, and this photo do confirm that Vice-President Nixon and Paul Patterson did meet at least once, and probably more than once during Patterson’s involvement with the Governor’s Conference committee. It is likely they also met on at least one of Nixon’s trips to Oregon during Patterson’s governorship (1952-1956). Patterson died January 31, 1956. We purchased this photo from the estate of a woman in Eugene. Her daughter had no idea how her mother came to have the photo.

The condition of the photo is VeryGood, with a 2.5” crease approx. 2” below the UR corner and extending about 2” into the image area, and a bit of light soil in the margins. There is a soft sepia toning to the photo. The photo itself is without any other faults. Vice-President Nixon’s signature is in blue fountain pen ink, while Governor Patterson’s signature is in black fountain pen ink. Below the Governor’s signature the words “Governor of Oregon” are in the same black ink and hand. We have not had it authenticated, but have compared this Nixon signature to facsimile examples in our references, and they compare favorably. As with all that we sell, this photo is covered by our money-back guarantee with respect to authenticity or any significant faults not mentioned in our description.
