#AKP-13 - “Greek Catholic Church” - Sitka, Alaska - $25.00

One of more than 100 photos we purchased from the estate of Mrs. W. B. Whitfield, who, in 1900, traveled to Ketchkan, Alaska with her dentist husband, who set up practice in that city. According to her daughter she was also the photographer. The photo itself measures approx. 3.25” x 3.25”, and it is mounted on a “cabinet” type, embossed backing card. The caption above is written in pencil on the back side of the card. It is probably ca. 1910-1915. A sign just to the left of the man’s head reads “The Baranoff”, and another sign just a bit further along reads “_roll Bros. - ___eral Merchants” (probably General Merchants). The man walking away from the camera is bearded, wearing a derby hat and high, starched collar, has a small folding satchel over his shoulder, and is carrying something like a lunch-pail in his left hand.

The condition is VeryGood+, with a bit of light toning at the bottom and right edges, and a dark gray, triangular “flare” at the UL. Otherwise the photo is clean, and well focused, though slightly under contrasted.
