#AKP-19 - “Yakatat (Alaska) - Indians Talk Swede” - $40.00

One of more than 100 photos we purchased from the estate of Mrs. W. B. Whitfield, who, in 1900, traveled to Ketchkan, Alaska with her dentist husband, who set up practice in that city. According to her daughter she was also the photographer. The photo measures approx. 3.25” x 5.4”. The caption above is written in ink on the back side of the card. It is probably ca. 1914. This ia a view from a ship... note the person at the extreme right, leaning over the railing and the curved wake, indicating that the ship had just completed a 180-degree turn. It clearly shows the village, low hills behind, and what may be a cannery and other commercial buildings.

The condition is VeryGood+, with slightly rounded corners as the only “fault”. Otherwise the photo is clean, bright and very well focused. The smaller, darker dwellings are inadequately contrasted to show up well against the dark of the forested hills behind. The balance of the image is adequately contrasted.
